UKCGC launches elearning on the role of Caldicott Guardians

This week we have launched the first module of our new elearning programme, The Role of the Caldicott Guardian.

The programme is for Caldicott Guardians and those interested in finding out more about the role Caldicott Guardians play in keeping people’s health and care data safe and ensuring that wise decisions are made about its use.

Developed in partnership with Health Education England and sponsored by the National Data Guardian (NDG), the learning supports NDG guidance published in August about the appointment, role and responsibilities of a Caldicott Guardian. This guidance introduced a formal requirement that widened the type and number of organisations who need a Caldicott Guardian.

The elearning is a reliable source of information for organisations implementing the guidance, and also for a much wider audience. It is made up of three elearning modules, each intended for a different audience.

The first module, Caldicott Guardians: sharing information and protecting confidentiality in health and care, is now available and is a general overview of the role, intended for a broad range of health and care staff. It will benefit those working in the NHS, adult social care, local authorities, and private sector partners.

A further two modules will follow: one for new or existing Caldicott Guardians, and one for senior staff who may need to appoint or support a Caldicott Guardian.

We will provide an update when these additional modules are available.

How to access the learning

For instructions on how to access the elearning, visit the programme page on Health Education England’s elearning for healthcare website. The programme is free for NHS health and care organisations. Others may also qualify for access through OpenAthens and can check their eligibility online.
