National Data Guardian’s annual progress report for 2023–2024 published

The National Data Guardian for Health and Social Care, Dr Nicola Byrne, has published her annual progress report for the financial year 1 April 2023 – 31 March 2024. The report highlights the key activities and achievements of Dr Byrne’s office, as well as commentary on significant developments beyond the financial year.

As an independent advisor to the government and the health and care sector, Dr Byrne ensures that health and social care data is used responsibly, ethically, and transparently. The report details the office’s work in guiding the health and social care sector through complex data governance, privacy, and security challenges, while promoting public trust in data use for research, planning, and patient care.

Though a small team, the National Data Guardian’s office works hard to have a far-reaching impact, helping stakeholders innovate with data while safeguarding individual rights. The report outlines these efforts and looks ahead to future priorities.
